On Wednesday, we decided to head back to Ueno to check out the museums there. It was the day when they opened back up after the holidays, and the main building, the National Museum of Tokyo had free admission. They also had groups performing outside. When we arrived, there was a group of flute players, Taiko drummers and koto players. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koto_(musical_instrument)
That was a lovely surprise. We caught the end of their music. After touring through the museum for about an hour, we met together, (ready for lunch) exited the building, and found this group of actors performing on the steps out front. The story line is a little sketchy, but there was a boy fishing, some dragons who went around nibbling on the tops of people's heads, and this venerable, smiling person who seemed to be using his fan to sprinkle good fortune upon the gathered audience. There was no speaking, just movement and traditional Japanese music as accompaniment. Another lucky accident.
